Empowering Self-Regulated Learning and Executive Function in Students

Students today face increasing challenges in managing their own learning, particularly in environments that demand greater autonomy and self-discipline. The trend toward fostering self-regulated learning (SRL) addresses these challenges by equipping students with the skills to set goals, monitor their progress, and adjust their learning strategies. Research by Zimmerman and Schunk (1998, 2011) highlights that SRL is essential for academic success, as it enables students to take control of their learning, leading to better outcomes and greater resilience in diverse educational settings.

Top schools across North America have recognized the importance of SRL and have implemented strategies to integrate it into their everyday teaching practices. These initiatives are designed to create more self-sufficient learners who can thrive in the classroom, higher education, and the world of work.

Our Solution

At Studyo, we offer a pragmatic approach to implementing self-regulated learning (SRL) in schools, designed to minimize teacher workload while maximizing student benefits. Our solution, developed under the guidance of Dr. Kelsey Losenno from McGill University, requires only a few minutes each day from teachers and provides a step-by-step plan to successfully integrate SRL into any classroom. This ensures that the process is both sustainable and scalable, empowering every school to help their students become more independent and effective learners.

Professional Development Workshops

Implementing Self-Regulated Learning starts with professional development for teachers and school staff. This critical phase provides teachers with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to get started. The workshops also enables the Studyo team to learn about your specific school and teachers’ needs so we can shape your plan to make students more self-directed and build their executive function skills.

This workshop series has been designed as a two-part program. Participants begin with Workshop 1, followed by Workshop 2, scheduled over the course of 3–6 months to support implementation, iteration, and reinforcement of classroom routines. Each session blends a focused research-based lens on self-regulated learning (SRL) and executive function (EF) with concrete, classroom-ready routines that teachers can immediately apply using Studyo. With each workshop, participants are pre-surveyed in order to customize the facilitation, build upon prior knowledge, and directly address current classroom needs—ensuring the approach is both sustainable and scalable across a school.

Workshops are delivered by Dr. Kelsey Losenno who’s research is focused on self-regulated learning. The workshops are co-designed with Pure & Applied, a learning and development organization with expertise in evidence-based instructional design and K12 professional development.

About the Instructor

Dr. Kelsey Losenno, PhD in Learning Sciences, McGill University

Dr. Kelsey Losenno is an expert in Executive Functions (EF) and Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in educational settings. With a PhD in Learning Sciences from McGill University, she has dedicated her career to exploring the nuances of student learning processes and developing effective instructional strategies. Her research delves into the components of EFs and SRL, providing valuable insights into how students can better manage their learning and behavior.

As an international researcher, author, and presenter, Dr. Losenno has published influential studies that highlight the impact of EFs and SRL on student outcomes. Her work offers practical strategies for teachers to foster these skills in their classrooms, empowering students to set goals, monitor their progress, and reflect on their learning. She also explores the role of technology in supporting EFs and SRL, demonstrating how digital tools can enhance student engagement and learning autonomy.

Dr. Losenno's workshops are designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and tools to implement EFs and SRL strategies effectively. She leads workshops that focus on integrating these principles into everyday teaching practices, creating structured and supportive learning environments. Her collaborative approach fosters partnerships between educational technology companies and schools, bringing innovative solutions to the classroom.

Passionate about improving educational outcomes, Dr. Losenno is a valuable resource for teachers seeking to enhance their teaching practices and support student success. Her expertise in EFs and SRL, combined with her commitment to innovative approaches, makes her an ideal facilitator for workshops aimed at developing these critical skills in students.

We are committed to aiding organizations in building their capacity for delivering effective and engaging education sustainably. To do this, Pure & Applied has assembled a high-performing team of individuals who bring to bear all that is “Pure” and all that is “Applied” to create the highest quality educational programs and share our knowledge and approaches along the way.

Workshops

This workshop series has been designed as a program whereby participants can begin with workshop 1, followed by workshop 2 and 3.

Workshop 1: Task Definition → Planning & Goal Setting (EF + SRL) with Studyo

In this workshop, teachers learn how to explicitly teach the “before you start” phase of self-regulated learning: defining the parameters of a task first, then planning and setting goals based on those parameters. The focus is on building repeatable classroom routines that reduce cognitive load, strengthen executive function, and make planning visible and coachable—using Studyo as the day-to-day scaffold.

Learning Objective:

  • Understand why task definition must precede planning and goal setting in effective SRL instruction.
  • Recognize common middle school patterns when students struggle to interpret tasks, estimate effort, or get started.
  • Learn and practice 1–2 classroom routines that guide students through task definition → planning → checkpoints/goals, with immediate classroom applicability.
  • Use Studyo intentionally to support these routines (capturing task parameters, chunking into subtasks/checkpoints, planning dates, prioritization/workload cues).

Who Should Take This Course:

Middle school teachers and support staff who want students to be more consistent with organization, planning, and follow-through—especially when students struggle with task initiation, time management, or completing multi-step assignments.

Duration: 2.5–2.75 hours (remote, includes a short break)

Value Proposition:

Teachers leave with ready-to-run routines and a rollout script they can implement the next week. Students gain clearer task understanding and more realistic plans—leading to stronger follow-through, fewer last-minute crises, and more teachable moments for EF and SRL skill growth.

Workshop 2: Monitoring & Evaluation Routines (Metacognition) (EF + SRL) with Studyo

This workshop focuses on the phase where metacognition becomes explicit: monitoring progress during work and evaluating strategy effectiveness after the task. Teachers build routines that help students assess strengths and weaknesses, identify which strategies worked (and when they didn’t), and make concrete adjustments for next time—supported by Studyo artifacts (progress tracking, checkpoints, notes) and optional teacher-facing insights.

Learning Objective:

  • Understand monitoring and evaluation as the SRL phase where students evaluate strengths/weaknesses and strategy effectiveness, and learn to adapt.
  • Build and practice 1–2 routines for monitoring cadence (checkpoints, progress signals, help-seeking triggers) and evaluation (strategy audit + adjustment plan).
  • Learn how to use Studyo to make monitoring and evaluation observable (progress tracking, checkpoints, short metacognitive prompts/notes).
  • Develop a 4–6 week integration plan for a real unit, including a lightweight evidence loop to refine practice.

Who Should Take This Course:

Middle school teachers who want students to sustain effort across longer tasks, become more strategic, and develop better self-assessment—particularly when students struggle with attention, persistence, or learning from feedback.

Duration: 2.5–2.75 hours (remote, includes a short break)

Value Proposition:

Teachers gain a practical system for building student metacognition without adding heavy workload. Students become more adaptive: they monitor earlier, adjust sooner, and learn which strategies help them succeed—improving completion, confidence, and independence over time.
