How healthy study habits will set your child up for success

Many of us were late-night crammers and school-project procrastinators in our younger years. When told by our parents it was time for homework, we preferred to play outside with our buddies. We dreaded hefty assignments and nerve-wracking exams.

We want our kids to have a different attitude about education now that we're older and wiser and appreciate the long-term benefits of homework and studying. It takes effective study skills to do well in school, regardless of grade. It also requires perseverance and drive. This article gives you tips to develop healthy study habits to ensure your child’s academic success.

Why are good studying habits important for students' success?

To graduate from high school with decent grades, one or two hours of studying per day is usually enough. Before entering college, students must acquire good habits in elementary and high school. It's sometimes too late once they start college to learn how to study successfully.

What is the best method to study?

Understanding each student's learning style is necessary for effective study habits. We can use this crucial knowledge to help students create habits that will lead to academic achievement. There are four learning styles outlined below and students tend to work best with any number of them. Find which is best for you or your child and work with it.

Visual Learning

Those who prefer to learn by observing are known as visual learners. The use of images, photographs, diagrams, whiteboards, and other visual aids is beneficial to these types of students. These students are strong at visualizing information, have a good sense of direction, and enjoy drawing and doodling.

Auditory Learning

These types of learners, who usually have an excellent sense of rhythm, excel at sound and music. These students are usually vocalists or musicians who are knowledgeable about a wide range of instruments and sounds. Aural learners are excellent listeners who learn best from verbal presentations such as lectures and speeches.

Reading/Writing Learning

These students like to work independently and use self-study. They are self-sufficient and aware of their own thoughts and feelings. They want to stay away from the crowds and prefer to learn in a calm environment where they can concentrate on the task at hand. Typically, these learners read textbooks or revision guides and copy specific notes from it.

Kinesthetic Learning

These students are all about touch, whether it's with their bodies or their hands. Physical activities and sports are significant in these students' lives. For these kids, who enjoy experimenting and learn best when they can do rather than watch or listen, hands-on learning is vital.

7 effective tips to help students develop healthy study habits

Study smarter rather than harder! Here are 7 effective study habits for distance learning and school study:

1. Spacing Out Study Sessions

For example, rather than cramming 10 hours of studying into one long marathon session, you may spread it out over several days, which will be far better for both your grades and your mental health.

Spacing out your study sessions not only improves your attention and recall, but it also makes for a less stressful learning experience. It also helps to avoid procrastination because you won't have to deal with any of those awful long study sessions.

2. Where Should You Study?

It's crucial to know where you study best because silence isn't always golden. Quiet settings like a library or a reading room may work for some but not for everyone. Do you concentrate better when there is some neutral background noise, such as in a cafe or when using dark noise? Do you find that listening to music while studying helps you retain information more quickly?

3. Try Studying with Someone

Two heads are better than one. This is especially true when it comes to studying, because working with one or two classmates allows you to:

  • Make a note exchange
  • Swap ideas with one another
  • Wrap your thoughts around a difficult topic
  • Complete your homework assignments faster
  • Hold each other responsible for their studies

A good study partner can make a massive difference. While studying on your own may be beneficial in some cases, you will most certainly require assistance at some point.

4. Study Way Ahead of Exams

Once you've received your exam schedule, make a revision plan and study schedule in between classes and activities. That way you won't have to worry about studying the night before an exam.

5. Don’t Do Too Much

This may seem counterintuitive but too much revision and studying can do more harm than good. You hear about kids who hammer out 4 hours of studying a day but in fact, only 2-3 hours of that time was effective studying. Don’t be afraid to do 1-2 hours once or twice a day. This will make your studying time way more efficient. Be smart and take a break!

6. Eliminate Distractions

Many things can distract you, whether it's your phone, your family, social media, or just any noise. Distractions, fortunately, do not have to get in the way of your studying. Put your phone on mute, turn off the Wi-Fi, ask others to give you some solitude, and find a place where you won't be disturbed or distracted. It may take some self-control at first, but you can do it.

7. Use a Study Planner

Knowing when your homework deadlines and exams is important to become a good student. When students use an app like Studyo outside of the classroom, they can plan, schedule, and remain on track, which will improve their enjoyment, mindset, and excitement for studying.

In and out of the classroom, Studyo empowers users to self-manage, take initiative, and solve problems through its Learning Management System. Studyo also encourages users to build a strategy for the next steps in order to complete their assignment on time. Integrated with Google Classroom, the user may now stay on track and plan.

When students are given clear directions to follow, they are more likely to succeed. Progress monitoring, customizable templates, and step-by-step assignment breakdowns are all included in our planner, making it simple to stay organized and plan for courses.

Studyo empowers you to influence the factors in your life, preparing you for academic and personal success.
